MJR: They asked the Baptist preacher what he thought about homosexuality. They took this preacher even further; what do you think about abortion, drinking, and smoking.... Then when Mr. Risher got on the stand, he was asked, "Have you ever been arrested for driving while drinking?" He had and pleaded guilty. Also on the stand, he did

admit there was the possibility that he had impregnated an eighteen year old girl and paid for the abortion of this girl. Homosexuality was on trial, but also the father's past was brought out and evidently this jury thought that this showed the macho male image.
AF: Let's not forget the violence. That he admitted hitting you.
MJR: And breaking my nose. But this evidently did not play a very important part with the jury. RFL: Do you have any legal recourse at this point?

MJR: Yes, we are in the appeal process now. We are on a jurisdictional question to the (state) supreme court asking them did the civil courts of appeal have jurisdiction? If they do then they have to rule on the merits of the case, if they do not, then this will allow this case to go into the federal courts. Ann and I will take this to the Supreme Court if we have to.
This case has been and will continue to be expensive. The two women have spent $26,000 and have not received any aid. The Dallas ACLU thought the
case was too controversial. The national ACLU said that they had already done their gay cases for that year. Through NOW and various gay groups across the country, along with their own funds they have accumulated only $10,000 and still owe $16,000. Anyone wishing to help can contact Mary Jo Risher at PO Box 3141 Dallas, Texas 75221.
Ms. Risher's and Ms. Foreman's story is told in the book By Her Own Admission. A Lesbian Mother's Fight To Keep Her Son by Gifford Guy Gibson
(Doubleday). Rights to the story have been purchased by ABCTV for a television movie.
